Amaroni

LATEST NEWS

4th August 2010

Since our last post we can report that after discussions with John, it was decided to transfer our interest in Mumtaz Begum  to him as although we were unwilling to continue with her, John still feels she does have the ability and therefore we wish him all the success with her. Jay Gee Wigmo arrived back at the Stud while we look for a new home for him. Karoshdee is still recovering from her injury and until her leg has healed, we are not looking for a home for her as we want to ensure that she is well before moving on to the next stage in her life. We also managed to find a new home for La Preciosa. It was not an easy decision as she was our first born but at 5 years old, she is young and deserves the chance to have a better life than simply running around the paddocks. We wish her new owner all the best and will be keeping a watchful eye on her as she is local.

Leeza has yet to begin breaking Little Star as she is still weak and there is no rush. Amaroni has been broken as is progressing well however neither will run as 2 year olds as both require time to mature.

29th June 2010

Although 5 months seems a long time, it has passed very quickly. During the last 5 months, Mumtaz Begum has had one run, whilst an improved performance was still no way near acceptable and therefore a new home is being found for her. Jay Gee Wigmo came to us with many issues and rather than try and “fix” them we have decided that a new home should be found for him too. The most disappointment was Karoshdee. After her run at Stratford last year, Karoshdee has various problems, all of which were overcome. She ran at Towcester and for some unknown reason decided to veer of the track unseating her jockey. She went back to Plumpton 2 weeks later and not only showed the Towcester race to be a one off but that she had retained her ability by finishing 3rd. The idea was to find another race soon after which we believed she would win. A week before her intended race, John advised that she had a swelling to her leg and after a week off, hosing and icing the swelling did not reduce enough to satisfy John that the leg was fine. A scan by the vet confirmed our worst fears, Karoshdee had blown her tendon, racing career over. There is no guarantees that with time the injury will heal so sadly we have decided to find a home for her as well. As can be read thus far, being involved in the King of Sports is no easy task and one requires a great deal of luck.

We are now left with the two 2 year olds and given the bad luck we have had thus far, we are not taking any chances with them. Leesa is currently preparing them and when they are ready and not before entries will be made. In the meanwhile all we can do is enjoy the Sport from a distance and hope our time will come again soon.

30th December 2009

As 2009 draws to a close, it is time to reflect on another hard year both in terms of results and the general economic climate both of which have been poor. The horses have not performed as well as we would have liked due to illness, bad weather, and in one case simply because she wasn’t good enough. However, all the horses are safe and well.

La Preciosa ran 3 times and was un-placed on each occasion. She was hard to fathom as she showed she wanted a trip at home and yet proved she couldn’t stay further than a mile and a quarter on the course. Dropping her back to a mile showed no improvement and a step up to a mile and a quarter proved even worse albeit conditions at Southwell that day didn’t help.

Mumtaz Begum also ran 3 times and whilst showing us that she had something on her first outing, her 2 subsequent outings were very poor. Thereafter she was found to have a severe back problem. It is only due to John’s insistence that she is still in training and she was due to run today, however, due to the weather, she has missed work and therefore she will be aimed at the fist available race in the New Year.

Karoshdee took a long time to come to hand, but showed that she does have the ability by finishing 3rd on her debut. In the days after the race she stopped eating and was very unwell and after being examined by the vet, she was found to be suffering from server stomach ulcers. A new diet and medication was prescribed and she is on the mend. The thing is that she ran with stomach ulcers and to our mind she has suffered from them for a while because she has never been a good doer and John has always worried about her weight. Given her performance under these conditions, we are excited by the prospect of her return if we can get her right.

Jay Gee Wigmo a late addition to the team, was and is unfit. He is a big horse and needs a great deal of work. In addition, not disclosed at the time of purchase he makes a noise and is thick winded. We shall have to see how he comes along failing which he has a back up job as a lead horse to Amaroni.

Amaroni has grown into a fine 16 hands plus colt. He has filled out and Leeza is very pleased with him and will start breaking him so that hopefully he will be cantering by February. Little Star on the other hand still requires time before she can start being broken and Leeza will decide when the time is right.

From the syndicates point of view, obviously it has been hard on our members with so few runners and poor performances however we are grateful for their continuing support and are pleased that all members have renewed their syndicate options.

Here’s to a better 2010

17th December 2009

La Preciosa ran at Southwell today and was faced with a snow storm, however, she ran very poorly and has been retired and is already back home at our stud in Lincolnshire. Although a very disappointing conclusion to her career, we are grateful she is home safe. Mumtaz Begum has been entered to run on Sunday 20th at Kempton and we hope she will get in.

7th December 2009

La Preciosa ran at Wolverhampton today and was simply not fast enough over a mile. P J Macdonald also reported that she was unbalanced around the bends which would indicate a sign of greeness. She will be entered to run over a mile and 3 furlongs on the 17th December 2009 at Southwell

3rd December 2009

La Preciosa is entered to run at Wolverhampton on Monday 7th December. Ian will be making a final decision after work on Saturday. Mumtaz Begum has fully recovered and we are still looking for a race. Karoshdee has been diagnosed with stomach ulcers and our vets have begun treating her. It would seem that she has been suffering since she was a yearling, making her run at Stratford all the more impressive. She will be out of action for at least 6 weeks. Jay Gee is simply unfit and we do not envisage running him before the start of Flat Season.  Both the yearlings have grown and Leeza will be starting with them shortly.

15th November 2009

La Preciosa made her long awaited debut at Market Rasen today. After consultation with Ian, it was decided that we run her in a bumper primarily for the experience but also because at home she was showing Ian that she stayed despite her breeding. She led from the start and was traveling beautifully for a mile before fading. Our jockey returned reporting that she simply did not stay 2 miles, that she traveled very well for a mile and in fact had it not been for the heavy ground, would have been able to have gone on a couple of strides and despite her work at home, she does indeed have the speed of a miler and does not want a trip. So although we were disappointed initially, we have come away knowing that she doesn’t want soft ground, that she wants a mile and no further, that she is quick enough to run at a mile and she has now had a race course experience which she took very well. We will let her come out of the race and start preparing her for a mile race most likely at Wolverhampton.

29th October 2009

It has been a long month with slow progress being made. John reports that Mumtaz Begum has recovered from the problems she had with her back and he is starting to look for a race for her. She has to show us the same ability that she shows at home as we have decided that should she not be able to perform on a race course then we will not be continuing our efforts with her.

Karoshdee has also continued to improve but John still feels that there might be something amiss with her as she shows signs of soreness after working. We are in no rush with her and John is determined to get to the bottom of the problem.

La Preciosa is working well and will be entered for a bumper at Haydock on the 5th November. As we have missed the flat season, Ian wants to intorduce her to racing via bumpers before we decide her future

We have added to our team of horses with the purchase of Jay Gee Wigmo, a 4 year old gelding by First Trump out of Queen of Shannon. Jay Gee is a direct descendant of Misacre our first foundation mare and thus he is also related to Amarone, whom we bred in the 80’s. Although Jay Gee hasn’t performed as well as one would hope, we are confident that under John’s care, he will flourish. Full details will be added to the horse’s page shortly.

28th September 2009

Mumtaz Begum has continued to receive treatment for her back. The good news is that she is cantering everyday and seems not to be in any discomfort. Karoshdee has also recovered from her exertions at Stratford and has come on well from the race. Ian reports that La Preciosa is working well and he intends to step her up this week. However, none of the horses will be entered whilst the ground is more like a road than turf. It is our opinion that there is no point in running any of them in these conditions and we will wait for there to be some cut in the ground before running again.

18th September 2009

Horse Racing is probably one of the most exciting sports, however, sometimes the downsides are hard to accept. Yesterday Bollin Franny, a most genuine horse from John’s stable ran at Yarmouth. He led from the start until the 2 furlong pole when he was bumped whilst under pressure. That innocent “bump” cost him his life. He has struck into himself and severed his tendon. Despite all efforts to save him, on the advise of the vet, he was euthanized. He didn’t belong to us, nor did we have any financial interest in him, so why are we reporting it ?

We are sorry for John and his team, the amount of care and effort they put into this job is sometimes unbelievable and to lose a horse in this way is tragic.

Sometimes we forget that horses are living beings and sometimes they are treated like machines. Maybe that’s why we not as successful because we refuse to push our horses when they are not ready, we won’t run them on ground that is more like a road than turf, we wont run them every week just because it seems like a good idea, we won’t run them if they really can’t do the job. And when they do run, regardless of the result, we hope they come home safe.

We are passionate about this Sport and our horses and we treat them with dignity and respect because without them, there would be no Sport of Kings.

13th September 2009

Hard Life, (Fortune’s Favourite half sister) finishes 2nd beaten a head in Premio Republiche Marinare (Listed Race) (Fillies) in Italy today.

Ian reports that La Preciosa is working well and will be stepped up next week.

12 September 2009

Mastery, Son of Sulamani wins Group One St Leger gives us more hope for Amaroni, now that not only is his Sire a proven Group One producer but his Dam’s half sister Hard Life wins listed race in Italy.

11th September 2009

Our vet checked Mumtaz Begum yesterday and she was found to be very lame behind, this being consistent with Richard Thomas looking down during the race at Lingfield. Although at this stage, the lameness is thought to related to a strained muscle, until our physiotherapist checks her, we wont be sure. Therefore she will be on the easy list for at least the next 2 weeks before being brought back into work. We would like to identify what the problem is and why it occurred because having studied her races, we believe that whatever the problem is has been in existence from the start. Having said that, she has never been lame or shown any signs of discomfort until now.

Ian has reported that La Preciosa’s blood result show that she is fine and she is now back in work. She will be brought along slowly to ensure we avoid the problem again.

Karoshdee has come out of the race well. We think that the ground at Stratford was a little on the firm side as she is showing signs of soreness. Again all necessary steps are being taken to help her recover and we have decided that unless ground conditions are suitable neither she nor any of the other horses will run.

Overall although not the best news, at least, we have found the problem with Mumtaz Begum and hopefully she will be able to prove that she is far better than she has shown so far.

9th September 2009

Mumtaz Begum run at Lingfield yesterday can only be described as too bad to be true. She was struggling from the start and never got into the race. Richard Thomas reported that she was never traveling. John feels that the filly is far better than her showing in this race as his other runner Red Willow ran a great race even though the ground was against her. John will have Mumtaz Begum thoroughly checked by the vets to see if we can shed some light on her poor performance and once we are satisfied there is nothing physically hindering her, we will decide where to go with her.

6th September 2009

Mumtaz Begum has been declared to run on Tuesday 8th Septmeber at Lingfield, on the turf this time. She will be ridden by Richard Thomas as Natalia has been booked to ride the stable’s other runner Red Willow.

5th September 2009

Karoshdee made her long awaited debut in a Bumper at Stratford today. Despite reports from home that the filly wasn’t showing as much promise as we would like, we took our chances and Karoshdee proved us all wrong by finishing a brilliant 3rd. Despite being delighted by the result, our joy was significantly marred by the news of the tragic passing of two young jockeys. Our thoughts go their families at this most difficult time.

20th August 2009

Mumtaz Begum ran at Lingfield today and on first glance ran very disappointingly. She was never traveling and finished well beaten, however, Natialia reported that the filly simply did not act on the all weather surface and that we should really draw a line through the race.today. Natalia also felt that we should step up to a mile. We have started looking !

Ian advised that after having La Preciosa blood tested, the results show that her bloods are wrong and the vet has advised that she be rested for at least 3 weeks before being brought back into work.

22nd July 2009

Mumtaz Begum made her debut at Yarmouth today and considering she had never seen a race course she was beaten 14 lengths. Natalia was very pleased with the way in which she traveled and felt that she was very green. We hope that she will learn a great deal from the experience and hope to have her back on the track shortly. She returned home a little shell shocked but happy enough to eat up.

Karoshdee was to be entered for tomorrow but will not run as trying to find the right race is proving difficult. She is ready to run so while we are looking for a race, John is taking the opportunity to take to Lingfield for a race course gallop.

Ian has reported that La Preciosa is still improving and has “penciled in” the 22nd August for her to make her debut at Ripon.

Amaroni and Little Star have settled in well at Leeza’s and will begin their breaking in process shortly.

18th June 2009

We tempted fate !!! Karoshdee was entered at Newbury on 23rd and Mumtaz Begum was due to be entered at Warwick on 25th. Neither will run as the John’s yard has been struck down with a viral infection, which means all the horses will be on the easy list for the next 2 to 3 weeks. It has been a long time since we had a runner and every time we think we will have one, we are disappointed but we keep hanging in there because of our love for the sport and the horses. On a brighter note, Ian Mcinnes has reported that La Preciosa is pleasing him everyday and...no.. we will just wait before making any further comment on when she might run. Amaroni and “Little Star” will be moved down to Leeza Long to begin their education. At a year and a month old, they will not be asked to do too much but they have to start somewhere.

27th May 2009

After months of waiting, (although we don’t want to tempt fate!) both Mumtaz Begum and Karoshdee are looking fantastic and are on course to make their debuts in June. La Preciosa, has recovered from her minor setback and has now joined Ian Mcinnes and we hope to be able to have her ready within the next 6 weeks..

22ndFebruary 2009

It has been a long and hard winter, with the weather conditions causing havoc with training regimes. Having visited the yard, we are pleased to report that Mumtaz Begum and Karoshdee are looking fantastic and are on course to make their debuts at the start of the Flat season, all being well. La Preciosa, has had a minor setback and the start of her campaign will be delayed. “Kali” continues to grow as do the two yearlings. We are delighted with both and are pleased to report that Amaroni is now exerting his “authority” on anyone who enters his stable !

31st October 2008

After discussion with John, Guapisima who has been plagued with all sorts of different problems, has been retired to stud. Karoshdee will be given the next few weeks off before starting back in work. Mumtaz Begum is still improving and we are hopeful that she might run this winter, however, we wont be pushing her. La Preciosa will start her training regime shortly and we hope she will be ready to run next year.

21st October 2008

It has been a relatively disappointing season, as none of the horses have been able to make their debuts, due to not being ready. Mumtaz Begum continues to improve every time she works but just lacks the maturity and John feels that she is not “quite there”. La Preciosa has been given time to mature and will be in full training shortly as Leesa feels she is now ready to go to the next step. Karoshdee has been removed from Henry Cecil and is now with John. We are very disappointed with her lack of progress and it was felt that to move her to John was the correct course of action. John will now assess her before we make a further decisions. Guapisima has been plagued with all sorts of different problems, none of which were serious but all of which took time to overcome. Again, John will make a final assessment as to her future shortly. With the Turf season coming to a close, we can only look forward to next season. This is racing, there are no certainty’s, no guarantees, just the realization of what might have been or what might be.

15th July 2008

Guapisima was not declared to run at Folkestone due to an injury sustained at the weekend. Although nothing serious John did not feel it was worth taking the risk with her. It is hoped that she will be back and ready to run within the next 2 weeks. La Preciosa is delighting Leesa on the gallops and is improving all the time, as is Mumtaz Begum. Henry Cecil reports that Karoshdee is doing everything nicely and will be stepped up in her work during the next 2 weeks.

7th July 2008

We are pleased to report that Guapisima has been entered at Folkestone on 10th July, however she will only make her debut ground permitting.

16th May 2008

We are delighted to announce the arrival of “Amaroni” born at 10.30pm on 15th May 2008. Both Mother, Fortunes Favourite and Baby are doing well

14th May 2008

It has been decided after “work” this morning, that neither Guapisima or Mumtaz Begum will be entered for races on the 22nd and 31st respectively. Whilst both fillies are working extremely well, with John being very pleased with both of them, he feels that they are simply not ready to do themselves justice within this timeframe and therefore we will wait until they are ready. It is not a case of months or years but days and we would prefer to see them run without excuses.

12th May 2008

We are delighted to announce the arrival of “Baby Star”, born this morning at 3.45am. Both Mother, Morning Star and Baby are doing well. The “Deliverer” however is exhausted !

8th May 2008

Guapisma is still on course to make her debut at Salisbury on 22nd May and Mumtaz Begum is heading for Newbury on 31st May

28th April 2008

Guapisma’s debut has been delayed until 22nd May at Salisbury as John feels she still needs the finishing touches added and while this is frustrating for us, having waited this long another couple of weeks won’t hurt us and hopefully, she will do herself justice.

It has also been decided that Karoshdee will by pass Royal Ascot. We were always going to be up against it with regard to time as we wanted to have her ready for a prep run in May and then onto the Ribblesdale. After much consultation with John, it was felt that it was too much to ask of the horse to make her debut in a Group 2 race and therefore we have decided not to enter. There are plenty of nice races for her later on in the year and we will see how she progresses before making any firm commitments.

Mumtaz Begum continues to impress and continues to drop her work rider at every opportunity. John feels she will be ready towards the end of May

La Preciosa is working well, however, she has taken longer to come to hand than the others and will tell us when she is ready.

17th April 2008

With the advent of better weather, all four fillies are now working well and John is pleased with their progress. Guapisima is the most forward of the four and seems to know what is expected of her before being asked. She will hopefully be making her debut at Nottingham on 9th May 2008.

Mumtaz Begum has toiled in the heavy ground at home, but with drying conditions, John feels that she will also be making her debut before long.

La Preciosa and Karoshdee are still coming to terms with their training regimes and we are hoping that these two fillies will make their debut at the end of May. Karoshdee is to be entered for the Ribblesdale Group 2 at Royal Ascot 2008
